Where MP4 files come from
MP4 is the default format for most recordings people want in writing: Zoom and Teams meetings, Loom and OBS screen recordings, webinars, lectures saved from a learning platform, Android phone videos and most video downloads. The converter treats them all the same way, because it only needs the speech.
An MP4 can also hold sound only. Zoom, for example, often saves an audio-only file next to the video, and voice recorders sometimes produce MP4 or M4A audio. Those work too, and they upload even faster.
| Recording | File you get | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Zoom meeting | MP4 video, often plus an M4A audio file | Upload the M4A if you have it; it is smaller |
| Teams or Google Meet | MP4 video | Download it from the recording link first |
| Screen recording (Loom, OBS, Windows) | MP4 or MKV | Both work as they are |
| Android phone video | MP4 | Upload straight from the phone browser |
| iPhone video | MOV, sometimes MP4 | Both work |
Why a 1 GB MP4 uploads in seconds
Before anything is sent, your browser separates the sound from the picture. The audio track of an hour-long screen recording is usually a few dozen megabytes, so that is all we receive. The picture never leaves your device, and on a phone the upload uses far less data.
If the audio cannot be separated in your browser, which can happen on older phones or with unusual codecs, the whole MP4 is uploaded instead, up to 2 GB with a free account or 500 MB without one.
MP4 to text or MP4 to subtitles
The same transcript comes in two shapes. Download TXT or Word when you want to read, quote or summarize what was said, for example meeting notes or a lecture. Download SRT or VTT when the text needs to sit on top of the video as captions: those files carry the start and end time of every caption, ready for YouTube Studio, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, CapCut or VLC.
We do not burn captions into the picture or translate them. The text is in the language spoken in the MP4.
If the transcript comes back empty or short
A few things cause most problems with MP4 files. Checking them first saves a second upload.
- The MP4 has no sound track, as with some screen recordings made with the microphone off
- The speech is very quiet compared with background music
- The video opens with a long silence or music: pick the language yourself before you start
- The file is damaged: try playing it to the end in VLC first
What converting MP4 to text costs
MP4 files up to 30 minutes are free in full, 3 a day, without an account. A longer MP4 shows its first 10 minutes free. After that you pay for the spoken length only, not the file size or resolution: a 50-minute webinar uses 50 minutes. Packs are 3 hours for $6.99, 15 hours for $19.99 or 50 hours for $49.99, and the minutes never expire.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert MP4 to text for free?
Upload the MP4 in the box above. Files up to 30 minutes get the full transcript free, 3 a day, with no account. Longer files show their first 10 minutes free.
How big can the MP4 file be?
Up to 2 GB with a free account and 500 MB without one, and up to 10 hours long. For most MP4s only the audio track is uploaded, so large files usually fit easily.
Can I get an SRT file from an MP4?
Yes. When the transcript is ready, download SRT or VTT. The captions are timed to the video and split by sentence.
Does it work with Zoom recordings?
Yes. Upload the MP4, or the separate M4A audio file Zoom often saves next to it, which is smaller and uploads faster.
Can I convert MP4 to text on my phone?
Yes. Open this page in Safari or Chrome, tap Browse files and pick the video. No app is needed.
Will it tell different speakers apart?
Yes. Speaker labels are on by default, so each sentence says Speaker A, Speaker B and so on. Setting the number of speakers in the settings makes the labels cleaner.
Is my video stored?
Usually only the audio track reaches us, and it is deleted after transcription, within 48 hours at most. Files are never used to train AI models.
Can I paste a link to an MP4 or a YouTube video?
No. Upload a file you have. If the video is online, download it first where you have the right to.
